Holidays to Tanzania offer an incredible opportunity to explore diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes. The best time to visit Tanzania is during the dry season, which typically runs from late June to October. However, different parks and attractions have varying peak seasons for specific wildlife experiences.
The northern circuit parks, including Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara, and Tarangire National Parks, are popular destinations and can be visited year-round. However, Tarangire National Park stands out as its wildlife viewing is particularly rewarding during the dry season.
Tarangire National Park is the sixth-largest national park in Tanzania, covering 2,600 square kilometers. It is known for its large herds of wildlife and is especially famous for its elephant population. The park is named after the Tarangire River, which serves as a vital water source for animals during the dry season.
Ngorongoro Crater, voted as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, is located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania. The crater is a volcanic caldera that offers breathtaking scenery and is home to the “big five” animals: elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, and rhinos. It is also a significant site for paleoanthropological discoveries, with Hominin fossils found in Olduvai Gorge.
Serengeti National Park is a vast and renowned national park in northern Tanzania, spanning over 14,763 square kilometers. It is part of the Serengeti ecosystem, which extends into the Mara and Arusha regions. The park is famous for its endless plains, diverse wildlife, and the annual Great Wildebeest Migration. The Serengeti offers incredible safari experiences and is home to some of the most luxurious safari lodges in Tanzania.
Lake Manyara National Park is known for its tree-climbing lions and the picturesque soda ash lake that attracts thousands of flamingos. It is located in the Monduli District of the Arusha Region and is the seventh-largest lake in Tanzania. The park’s diverse landscapes provide habitats for various animal species, making it a unique destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
During your holiday in Tanzania, a visit to the Meserani Snake Park is a must. Located west of Arusha on the route to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the snake park offers guided tours where you can learn about some of the world’s most dangerous snakes, including the Black Mamba, Green Mamba, Egyptian Cobra, and Puff Adders. You can even hold a live snake and witness crocodile feedings. Additionally, you can explore the Maasai Cultural Museum with a Maasai guide and support the Free Education Centre, which contributes to the education of the local Maasai community.
